VTS Opinion of Use: Hard to find early version! Another pre-war beauty! It's a stunning example and these are very hard to find in this condition and with these early "features"! Serial number accuracy has always been a problem. There are many references to the production numbers for the Royal portables but many don't match. While the SN on this one is four digit, it's slightly over the 6000 most collectors consider the cutoff for 1927 models. This is definitely the earliest version! The top body panel is riveted (not tack welded), the escapement is likewise completely different from the 1928 and later models. It's tight but not as responsive as the "newer" version. There is no carriage release on the left side and the line release is only available via a nice, machined lever. Not the typical flat "spade" lever found on nearly all other models. The paper tray screws are nickel plated vs galvanized. The carriage margin scales are also riveted with the lower attaching and functioning in a completely different manner compared to the 1928+ models. Other mechanical evidence clearly makes this one an early version. Would I use this to do more than type notes or letters? No! It's not responsive enough to really get going and it's also scarce. Any wear and tear will hurt the value. It should be used gently. It's an amazing piece of history! It has been fully degreased, cleaned, adjusted, oiled, tested and comes with a new ribbon installed. Over 3 hours of a hands on process performed over several days. It's ready to type right out of the box! Thanks for looking and please let me know if you have any questions about this beautiful, original vintage typewriter or need more pictures :-)
